Build your own power supply

Who would have believed as little as 30 or 40 years ago that we would someday heat water by sunlight with the help of a homemade solar panel on the roof, generate electricity from a homemade wind turbine in the back yard or even run our cars on water! There can be little doubt that we are experiencing something of a revolution in the way we live our lives, in terms of the choices we make and the actions we take to preserve the fragile environment we live in.

The technology for this and much more is no longer beyond the reach of the average consumer and the benefits to be gained from embracing it are indisputable.

But, revolution or not, it is clear that we still have a long way to go towards saving our planet.

It has been suggested that the average American still has a carbon footprint which is double the global average. With that in mind, there has never been a more appropriate time to start looking at ways to reduce your footprint by creating a more sustainable lifestyle. With just a little effort, and not a lot of money, we could reduce our energy consumption by at least 25% and maybe a whole lot more – doing the planet a favour and lightening the load on our wallets too.

Top 10 tips for a greener lifestyle

  • Change to CFL light bulbs – Changing to CFL light bulbs can reduce your power consumption by as much as 75%. Although the initial purchase cost is higher, the cost of changing is quickly recovered. Alternatively, you can try creating your own independent energy supply.

  • Buy local organic groceries – This is a big step towards cutting down on ‘food miles’ and it’s healthier too! You could also try growing your own organic vegetables .

  • Know where you stand – Take a few moments to calculate your carbon footprint. Knowing exactly how much of an impression your leaving on the environment will make it easier to consciously reduce it.

  • Change your driving habits – Enthusiastic driving can greatly increase the amount of fuel used for a given journey. If your in the market for a new car you could opt for a Hybrid or Bio-Fuel version, most manufacturers include at least one of these options in their range. If you don’t plan on changing your car it’s now possible to practically run your car on water byusing a DIY Hydrogen fuel cell.

  • Reduce, Re-use, Recycle! – Its doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to reduce the amount of waste we produce or to recycle the waste we do produce.

Paper products, plastics and metals are all easily disposed of by taking them to the local recycling centre. You can recycle old batteries to use again in the home and most of the food waste from the kitchen can be used to make your own compost, especially useful if your already growing your own vegetables.

  • Turn Off Appliances – Household electrical items such as TV’s and computers can use as much as 20% of their normal consumption when left on standby. Always switch off at the mains overnight and when not in general use.

  • Renovating or re-modelling your home? – Be sure to use top quality insulation and plenty of it. Take the time to do some research and get advice on this. You can greatly reduce your carbon emissions by reducing the amount of fuel you use to heat your home. Good quality insulation, used appropriately can also save you a lot of cash over the lifetime of it’s use.

  • Doing the Laundry – Make sure your washing machine has a hot water supply as well as a cold one. 90% of the energy used during a wash goes on heating the water. There is no point heating more cold water if you already have hot water in the tank. Also, try washing a little cooler. Just turning the temperature down from hot to warm can cut the energy usage in half!

  • Buy energy efficient appliances – When buying appliances for the home look for the energy rating labels. You can find these on anything from TV’s to microwaves to washing machines. The higher the rating the more energy efficient the appliance will be.

  • Turn your thermostat down – Turning your thermostat down by just one degree can result in savings of up to 10% on your fuel usage.

An Eco-Friendly lifestyle starts at home with the changing of a light bulb, a walk to work, or the simple act of turning off and appliance before you go to bed.
