Keeping Chickens: Why Keep Chickens?
Raising free range chickens at home is very cheap and easy. There are
lots of different reasons why people choose to keep chickens, here are just a few of them.
#1) Chickens love kitchen scraps- Chickens have very voracious
appetites and will eat almost any kind of kitchen food waste. Instead of throwing all that leftover food in
the waste bin you can use it to supplement the diet of your own flock of chickens.
#2) Fresh, free range eggs- Who do you know that doesn't eat eggs? apart from the many
other benefits of keeping chickens on of the main ones is that they produce fresh eggs every day. Not only fresh
but free range organic eggs which taste better and are mor beneficial to your health.
#3) Chickens are a great source of natural fertilisers- The waste produced
by chickens has been used for centuries by farmers and small holders to enrich the soil for growing crops in. They
make a very useful addition to any organic garden and will also keep insects and pests under control as they forage
naturally amongst the vegetables.
#4) Chickens make great, low maintainance pets- Chickens need very little by way of maintainance
other than the daily supply of food and clean water and the once weekly change of bedding and litter. They are
entertaining and educational for both children and adults alike and can be fascinating breeding projects. What can
be more exciting than watching a new born chick emerging from its egg and watching it grow and develop to produce
eggs of its own.
#5) Chickens make great, if accidental, gardeners! - Having a flock of chickens
loose in your garden benefits in many ways. Chickens eat all kinds of plant life and weeds which would otherwise
overrun the garden if left unattended. They will actively seek out insects, bugs, slugs and snails which gardeners
spend a lot of time and effort trying to control. To add to all of this, they produce top quality organic
fertiliser as they go about their business!
