Follow these step by step instructions for making your own egg candler and you can save some money while working on an enjoyable diy project.

Cut the four sides and base from a piece of fibreboard or plywood, any material from 1/2" to 3/4" is ideal but in this case, fibreboard has been used.
You will need:
2) 4"x4" (ends)
2) 7"x5 1/2" (sides)
1) 4"x7" (base)

Before assembly of the box, line up the sides and end pieces and mark the height of the end piece against the side to give the position of the slot which will be cut to take the sliding top.
A 1/4" slot can be cut along the inside of both sides in a number of ways depending on the tools you have available. In this photo a rail saw set to 1/4" deep is used to make two cuts to produce a wide enough slot.
Once the slots are cut you can line up all the pieces to check for accuracy of the measurements and to make sure everything fits together as intended.
To avoid splitting, and to make the assembly process easier, the pieces should pre drilled before being assembled with screws. Screw the pieces firmly together with 1-1/2" screws. A power driver will make this task much easier but the screws can be easily driven by hand once they are pre drilled.
Complete the assembly of the box by firmly screwing all four sides and the base into position. Once the box is assembled, cut a removable top piece to sit below the sliding top. This should be cut loosely enough to allow easy removal for access to the lamp.
