Learn How To
Make Honeycomb From Your Hive
Keeping honey bees is a great way to compliment
your organic lifestyle and apart from the benefits of
harvesting your own honey, keeping honey bees is great for the

pollination of plants and flowers and so are crucial to the
survival of wild plant species. The honey they produce can
bring great health benefits too. Keeping your own honey bees
couldn’t be easier. It doesn't take up a lot of space so even
if your one of the new breed of 'urban gardeners' you can still
enjoy the simple pleasures of keeping an apiary.
Honey, one of the most natural and healthy foods, has been
eaten for thousands of years and was first used by Stone Age
man who stole the honey from nests of wild bees. It was later
created in artificial nests made from hollowed out logs. These
days however, bee keeping is a little more
advanced.
There are approximately 10,000 species of bees but the one we
are concerned with here is the honeybee or bombus
terrestris, to give it it’s Latin title.

The workers- these are the non fertile
females
The drones- these exist in the hive in much smaller numbers
and are usually only present in the
summer.
Honey is produced by the bees from the nectar of flowers and is
used to feed the bee larvae during the winter. It’s this same
honey that you can harvest for your own use and it can be used
in different forms such as liquid honey, creamed honey and cut
honeycomb. There are also some useful by products of the
beehive such as bee’s wax, which is highly valued as a product
used in the making of candles and furniture polish and such
like.
