Keeping honey bees is a great way to compliment your organic lifestyle and apart from the benefits of harvesting your own honey, keeping honey bees is great for the environment too. Honey bees play a central role in the pollination of plants and flowers and so are crucial to the survival of wild plant species. The honey they produce can bring great health benefits too. Honey, one of the most natural and healthy foods, has been eaten for thousands of years and was first used by Stone Age man who stole the honey from nests of wild bees. It was later created in artificial nests made from hollowed out logs. These days however, bee keeping is a little more advanced. 

There are approximately 10,000 species of bees but the one we are concerned with here is the honeybee or bombus terrestris, to give it it’s Latin title.

    The queen- the fertile or reproductive female  
      The workers- these are the non fertile females  
        The drones- these exist in the hive in much smaller numbers and are usually only present in the summer.  

           

          Honey is produced by the bees from the nectar of flowers and is used to feed the bee larvae during the winter. It’s this same honey that you can harvest for your own use and it can be used in different forms such as liquid honey, creamed honey and cut honeycomb. There are also some useful by products of the beehive such as bee’s wax, which is highly valued as a product used in the making of candles and furniture polish and such like. 

          So why keep bees? 

          The answer to this question is as vast and varied as the people who keep them! Here’s just a small sample of the benefits to keeping your own bees: 

          First and foremost they produce honey! Honey is a natural sweetener and has been known to have many benefits to our health. Honey has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. One of the simplest and most effective cures for hay fever is to eat honey from a local beehive.
